Research Directory and Bibliography of Swiss and Italian Pioneers in Australasia
Compiled by Clare Gervasoni

This directory is a listing of Swiss and Italian pioneers who arrived in Australia and New Zealand before 1901. It also lists pioneers in their towns of origin and the ships in which they travelled to Australasia.

This research directory is a working document, which will be added to and corrected annually. It is hoped that the information and contacts provided will assist in gathering accurate information on a very interesting early migration to Australia - that of the Italian speakers. It should be remembered that the information in this document is only as reliable as the original informant, so you are advised to check information given in each entry from primary sources.

Many previously published accounts about Swiss and Italians Pioneers are, in part, inaccurate. The information in this book should be used as a starting point for research as not all information has been gained from primary sources. You are encouraged to write to the publisher highlighting inaccurate information in both this publication and/or other publications. In this way inaccuracies in publications can be updated and corrected. This is important as many authors repeat inaccuracies in previous publications because they are not aware of such errors. This Research Directory can be used as a forum to correct such errors.

Listed names that are not Swiss or Italian in origin have been included where there is an association with a Swiss or Italian citizen (eg marriage). In some cases, where a name has been taken from official records or newspapers, an assumption has been made as to the correct spelling and origin of the name. Reports of errors would be appreciated.
