Victorian School Children 1863

INTRODUCTION
The information in these microfiche has been transcribed from the Inspectorís Reports on Schools Inspected, 1863, Volume 1. These reports are contained in Victorian Public Record Series number 904, Unit 1, (VPRS 904, Unit1), which is located at the Public Record Office of Victoria, Laverton Repository.

The reports submitted by inspectors of schools have been bound together in volume one, VPRS 904. No other similar volumes have been found at the time of publishing these microfiche. The reports were compiled under the authority of Victorian Board of Education, 1863. There may be other lists of pupils in Victoria in 1863. This list is not conclusive and is not meant to represent all pupils in Victorian schools in the year 1863.

The Alphabetical Surname index of Victorian School Children is comprised of four microfiche of over 230 pages, which contains over 8,000 names and a short introduction. It is an alphabetical list of names of pupils which has been transcribed from the Inspectorís Reports on Schools Inspected in 1863. A list of schools covered in these reports has also been included.

All care has been taken to transcribe accurately, but due to the age of the original document, and the difficulty in transcription, please refer back to the original register if there is any doubt over the spelling of a surname.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

CONTENT OF REPORTS

The reports contain the names of pupils attending schools, their age, the date of examination, and occupations of parents (this is not written on all reports). They list examination results, and the repair of the school buildings. Comments on the suitability of teachers and recommendations are also included. Schools "under standard" were noted by the inspectors.

CONTENT OF MICROFICHE

The microfiche contain an alphabetical index of names of pupils, their age, occupation of parent (if given in the report), the school which they attended and the date of examination of the school. All examinations in this volume were in the year 1863. In subsequence to the exact nature of the information, the age of some pupils is given in years and months, and the exact date of examination given in day and month, the year being 1863, the date of birth for some pupils is able to be calculated accurately to month/year of birth.
