Swiss and Italian

Few people realise that Italian speakers arrived in Australia prior to World War Two. One such migration was to the Daylesford goldfields where in the mid 1800s over 10% spoke Italian. There was even an Italian Library!

This project aims to list all Italian speakers in Australasia up until 1900. The town of origin and the ship they emigrated on is also to be listed.

Clare Gervasoni has compiled a 'Research Directory and Bibliography of Swiss and Italian Pioneers in Australasia 2002' which is updated periodically. A page is included for researchers to contact her for inclusion in this directory. They can also contact each other through this Research Directory.

This is a great research tool and a way to contact those who have similar interests.

Research Directory & Bibliography of SWISS & ITALIAN SETTLERS
Published and updated periodically.

Three research categories enable those researching the same name, those who left from the same town or travelled on the same ship, to correspond with others interested researchers. You may be able to discover early photographs of your ancestor, the town of origin of your ancestor, or stories from the ship your ancestor travelled.
